Title: The Lion in the Room (Read Below)
Location: Erindi, Namibia, 2018
Have you heard of the phrase, “the Elephant in the room”? It’s meant to signify an enormously important topic that is very obvious, but everyone chooses to ignore. Like the decline of wildlife across the world. Everyone knows it’s happening, but most choose to talk about the weather instead of discussing actual solutions for what will eventually become our own demise. Though, I guess we should be talking about the weather, because… well you know, the climate. Anyway, I digress.
The phrase “the Lion in the room” is a slightly different story. It’s referring to an important topic that is not at all obvious to anyone, but it should be. It’s not obvious, because most people cannot see it. Most people cannot see it, because the topic is hidden behind itself.
This is the problem for Lions.
Lions are “the Lion in the room” topic. Let me explain what I mean. For Lions, you’d find it almost impossible to locate a person on this planet who doesn’t know what a lion is. It’s so ingrained in our culture dating back thousands of years, we’re almost born with the image of them in our minds. Yet, how much does the average person know about the life of an actual Lion today?
The issue that is hidden: Lions might stand the chance to live on in our memories and culture, but we’re actually dangerously close to losing them forever in reality. It just doesn’t seem this way because we see lions everywhere. They appear enormously plentiful in our global culture after all, so what could be wrong? This image we have in our minds compounds a false reality. We celebrate the Lion so much, but most of us stop there. At the celebratory part. The Lion Logos. The Lion teams. The tattoos. Millions of photos of lions from people who go out on safari to shrinking wildlife preserves. The brand ambassadors. The list goes on… Sorry if this sounds a bit like a rant, because it sort of is. I’m personally tired of people rooting for the team, but not supporting it when support is needed most. There’s plenty of enthusiasm for what the lion signifies, but where’s the focus on saving the actual lions?
The only reason why I’m not anymore harsh than I have to be with most people… is because I know that the majority literally don’t know. And that’s where I need you to come in. I want you to share with people that there are less than 20,000 lions in the wild compared to 450,000 in the 1940s. They’ve been decimated across 95% of their home range. There are almost as many lions in captivity in South Africa alone as there are in the entire wild. Poached, hunted, and killed for their body parts, we’re on track to lose the real lions if we don’t turn this around now. Yet, we don’t talk about it. Because most people don’t know.
I’m tired of the lion being in the room and the real lion not being talked about. If you have this print in your home, I want you to promise me that you’ll talk about the Lion in the room.
P.S. I think Lion tattoos are cool.
