Title: Born Savanna
Location: Erindi, Namibia, 2018
I remember the moment so vividly. The exact moment that I captured this portrait of a young Cheetah cub at Erindi back in 2018. Eyes affixed, scanning, curious, and innocent. I’ve been so fortunate to document his life from the very start. From just barely keeping up with mum in the thick dry bush, to now thriving as an adolescent Cheetah along with his brother. The pair roams the savannah, unknown to them that the future of Cheetahs rests on their shoulders.
But their future also rests on YOUR shoulders… on OUR shoulders.
Over the past few years, I’ve spent countless hours with wild Cheetah at Erindi. Tracking on foot, witnessing the gentleness of a mother as her cubs feed on milk, the excitement of a hunt, tense encounters of Cheetah with other big cats, and the countless other often unpredictable behaviors that distinguish Cheetahs.
I’ve also witnessed firsthand the reality of their demise across Africa.
Cheetahs are threatened by a multitude of factors. Population fragmentation, illicit pet trade, persecution by farmers protecting their livestock. And there are few safe places left for respite from such pressures. Coupled with a naturally high cub mortality rate, it’s been difficult for Cheetahs to gain traction at this critical juncture for the future of their species.
However, this particular cub exemplifies the dedication of those who choose not to accept the possibility of a world without Cheetahs. Born to a Cheetah named Savannah, he is the second generation of a rewilding program at Erindi in a conservation partnership between the Reserve, a true safe haven for wildlife, and the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) a leader in the protection of this incredible species.
